Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Flax (Linum usitatissimum), specifically flaxseed, is widely used to support and treat constipation in adults, and this use is supported by scientific evidence. Flaxseed is a rich source of both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber. The insoluble fiber increases stool bulk, which helps to stimulate intestinal peristalsis and speeds up bowel movements. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that flaxseed supplementation can significantly increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency in adults with constipation.

A randomized controlled trial published in Nutrition Research (2012) found that daily intake of flaxseed improved bowel movement frequency and stool consistency in constipated patients compared to placebo. Other studies, such as one published in Phytotherapy Research (2015), have shown flaxseed to be as effective as psyllium husk in relieving symptoms of constipation.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) herbal monograph acknowledges the traditional and well-established use of whole or coarsely ground flaxseed for the treatment of habitual constipation. The safety profile of flaxseed is favorable, with mild gastrointestinal side effects being the most common.

In summary, flaxseed is scientifically validated as an effective and safe remedy for constipation in adults, thanks to its high fiber content and demonstrated efficacy in clinical studies.
