Galactooligosaccharides (GOS) are prebiotic fibers that have been scientifically studied for their effects on gut health and constipation in adults. GOS are not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to reach the colon where they are fermented by beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. This fermentation process increases the production of short-chain fatty acids and gases, which can enhance bowel motility and improve stool frequency and consistency. Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have evaluated the effect of GOS supplementation on adult constipation. For instance, a 2017 systematic review in Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics found that prebiotic fibers, including GOS, significantly improved stool frequency and consistency in adults with constipation compared to placebo. Specific studies have shown that daily GOS supplementation (typically 5-15 grams) over several weeks can lead to increased stool frequency and softer stools in individuals with mild to moderate constipation. The proposed mechanisms include increased fecal bulk due to the osmotic effect of GOS and a favorable shift in the composition of the gut microbiota. The available evidence suggests that GOS are a safe and effective adjunct for managing constipation in adults, especially as part of a broader dietary and lifestyle approach.
