Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Grains, particularly whole grains, are widely recognized for their role in supporting digestive health and alleviating constipation in adults. The primary reason is their high dietary fiber content, especially insoluble fiber, which adds bulk to stool and promotes regular bowel movements. Numerous clinical studies and authoritative health organizations, such as the American Dietetic Association and the National Institutes of Health, recommend increasing whole grain intake (e.g., wheat, oats, brown rice, barley) as a first-line dietary intervention for constipation.

Meta-analyses and randomized controlled trials have shown that dietary fiber from whole grains increases stool frequency and improves stool consistency in adults with mild to moderate constipation. For example, a 2013 systematic review in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics concluded that fiber supplementation, including from whole grains, significantly increased stool frequency in adults with constipation. The effect is attributed to the fiber’s ability to retain water, increase fecal mass, and stimulate peristalsis in the colon.

While refined grains lack much of the beneficial fiber, whole grains have a well-established place in both traditional and modern dietary recommendations for constipation. However, the degree of benefit can vary depending on individual tolerance and the type of grain consumed. Overall, the use of whole grains for constipation is strongly supported by scientific evidence, and is frequently recommended as a non-pharmacological treatment option.
