Indian Redwood (commonly known as Caesalpinia sappan or "Pathimukham" in Ayurveda) has a history of use in various traditional medical systems, primarily in India and Southeast Asia. Traditionally, its heartwood has been used for a range of purposes—including as a blood purifier, anti-inflammatory agent, and remedy for skin conditions. While there are historical references in some Ayurvedic and Siddha texts to its use as a mild laxative or digestive aid, the evidence is sparse and not well-documented. The use of Indian Redwood specifically for the treatment of constipation in adults is not strongly emphasized in classical Ayurvedic literature compared to other herbs like Triphala, Senna, or Isabgol (Psyllium husk). Furthermore, scientific studies examining its effects on constipation or gastrointestinal motility in adults are lacking. Most modern research on Indian Redwood focuses on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, rather than on any laxative or bowel-regulating effects. Thus, while there is some traditional precedent for its use as a digestive aid, the strength of evidence supporting Indian Redwood as a treatment for adult constipation is very limited and not backed by scientific validation.
