Inulin is a type of soluble dietary fiber found in many plants, especially chicory root. Its use for treating or supporting constipation in adults is primarily justified by scientific evidence. Inulin functions as a prebiotic fiber, which means it is not digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract but is instead fermented by beneficial gut bacteria in the colon. This fermentation process increases stool bulk and water content, which can help stimulate regular bowel movements.
Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have examined the efficacy of inulin and inulin-type fructans in relieving constipation. These studies have found that inulin supplementation can increase stool frequency and improve stool consistency in adults with mild to moderate constipation. For example, a 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in the journal Clinical Nutrition concluded that inulin supplementation significantly increased stool frequency compared to placebo. Other studies have also reported improvements in subjective symptoms such as bloating and straining.
While inulin is generally well tolerated, higher doses may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as gas and bloating in some individuals. Nevertheless, the preponderance of evidence supports its use as a mild, safe, and effective means of improving bowel regularity in adults with constipation. Thus, the use of inulin for constipation is supported by a moderate to strong level of scientific evidence.
