Lactobacillus fermentum is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its role in supporting gut health, including the management of constipation in adults. The scientific evidence supporting its use for constipation is limited but emerging. Some small-scale clinical studies and pilot trials have suggested that certain probiotic strains, including L. fermentum, may help improve bowel movement frequency and stool consistency in individuals with constipation. The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the gut microbiota, enhancement of intestinal motility, and production of short-chain fatty acids that can stimulate bowel movements.
However, the majority of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on probiotics for constipation have focused on other strains, such as Lactobacillus casei or Bifidobacterium lactis, rather than specifically on L. fermentum. A few studies, such as pilot trials or those using multi-strain formulations that include L. fermentum, have reported some benefit in reducing symptoms of constipation, but these studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological limitations.
Current systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while probiotics as a group may have a modest benefit for constipation, there is not enough high-quality evidence to recommend L. fermentum alone for this purpose. Therefore, the use of L. fermentum for adult constipation is supported by limited scientific evidence, warranting further research to establish efficacy and optimal dosing.
