Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lemon fiber is derived from the peel and pulp of lemons and is primarily composed of insoluble and soluble dietary fibers such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and pectin. The use of lemon fiber to support or treat constipation in adults is supported by a moderate body of scientific evidence, mostly based on the known effects of dietary fiber on bowel function. Dietary fibers, particularly those from fruits and vegetables, are well established to increase stool bulk, promote regularity, and reduce the symptoms of constipation by accelerating intestinal transit and retaining water in the stool. While specific large-scale clinical studies directly investigating lemon fiber for constipation are limited, the effects of citrus fiber (including lemon) have been studied and found to be similar to other fruit fibers in promoting laxation. For example, a 2017 review in Nutrients highlights the role of citrus fibers in increasing fecal bulk and frequency. Lemon fiber’s content of pectin, a soluble fiber, is notable for its ability to form gels and ease stool passage. However, most clinical recommendations for constipation focus on increasing overall fiber intake, not specifically lemon fiber. Thus, while the general mechanism is scientifically validated, direct evidence for lemon fiber is moderate, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
