Nopal (Opuntia ficus-indica), also known as prickly pear cactus, has a long history of use in traditional medicine in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, particularly for digestive health, including the relief of constipation. The traditional use is based on the high fiber content of nopal pads, which are consumed cooked or raw. Dietary fiber is well-known to promote bowel regularity by increasing stool bulk and water content, facilitating easier passage of stool. In folk remedies, nopal is often recommended as a gentle laxative or for general gastrointestinal wellness.

There is some scientific support for these traditional claims, albeit limited. Nopal contains both soluble and insoluble fibers, which have been shown in broader nutritional research to benefit constipation.
