Oat bran is scientifically validated as a supportive dietary intervention for constipation in adults. Oat bran is a rich source of insoluble and soluble dietary fiber, particularly beta-glucans. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that increasing fiber intake, especially from sources like oat bran, improves bowel regularity and stool consistency. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2013) found that elderly patients with chronic constipation who consumed oat bran daily experienced significant improvements in stool frequency and consistency compared to those not receiving additional bran. Additionally, oat bran was shown to be well tolerated and effective as an alternative to laxatives in some studies.
The physiological mechanism is primarily related to the ability of oat bran fiber to increase stool bulk and water content, stimulating peristalsis and facilitating easier passage of stool. Soluble fibers in oat bran also undergo fermentation in the colon, producing short-chain fatty acids that support gut health. Major dietary guidelines and reviews (e.g., American Gastroenterological Association) recommend increasing fiber intake, including oat bran, as a first-line approach for managing mild to moderate constipation.
