Senna auriculata has traditional use in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as a laxative, but more importantly, the Senna genus is scientifically recognized for its laxative properties due to the presence of sennosides. Sennosides are anthraquinone glycosides that stimulate bowel movements by irritating the lining of the colon and promoting peristalsis. While the majority of clinical studies and pharmaceutical products use Senna alexandrina (Cassia senna), Senna auriculata (also known as Cassia auriculata) contains similar compounds, including anthraquinones, that are believed to have comparable effects.
Several pharmacological studies have confirmed that extracts of Senna auriculata leaves and pods possess significant laxative activity in animal models, attributed to their anthraquinone content. However, direct human clinical trials specifically using Senna auriculata are limited, and much of the scientific evidence for its use in constipation is extrapolated from the broader Senna genus. The World Health Organization and major pharmacopeias recognize Senna species as effective, short-term remedies for constipation in adults, though S. alexandrina is the reference species.
