Evidence supporting the use of: Vietnamese sophora
For the health condition: Constipation (adults)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Vietnamese sophora (Sophora flavescens), also known as "Khổ sâm" in Vietnamese, has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, including Vietnamese, Chinese, and Korean systems. Historically, Sophora flavescens root is primarily used for its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-parasitic properties, and is often included in formulas for skin diseases, gastrointestinal disturbances, and as a general tonic. In some traditional preparations, it is included as a minor ingredient in complex herbal prescriptions for gut health, sometimes in combination with other herbs that have more direct laxative effects. However, the direct use of Vietnamese sophora specifically to support or treat constipation in adults is limited and not prominent in classical or folk herbal medicine literature. There are no high-quality modern scientific studies demonstrating its efficacy for constipation, and its traditional use for this purpose is at best tangential, often as part of multi-herb concoctions rather than as a primary remedy. Therefore, while there is some tradition of use for digestive complaints, the evidence for its specific benefit in constipation is weak and not well supported by scientific research. The rating reflects the limited and indirect traditional use for this indication.
