Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic bacterium commonly used to support gut health, and its use for treating constipation in children has been investigated in several clinical studies. The rationale for its use is grounded in the understanding that gut microbiota can influence bowel habits, and probiotics may help modulate intestinal transit time and stool consistency. However, the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of L. acidophilus specifically for childhood constipation is limited and mixed.

Some randomized controlled trials have evaluated the role of probiotics, including L. acidophilus, for constipation in children. For example, a 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis (Cresci & Bawden, 2015; Wojtyniak et al., 2017) found that while some probiotic strains may improve stool frequency or consistency, results are inconsistent and often strain-specific. Certain studies combining L. acidophilus with other probiotic strains showed modest improvements in stool frequency, but these effects were not always statistically significant, and the benefit over placebo was generally small. Additionally, the studies had limitations such as small sample sizes, short duration, and variability in probiotic preparations.

Current clinical guidelines typically do not recommend probiotics as a first-line treatment for childhood constipation, emphasizing that more robust, large-scale studies are needed. Nonetheless, L. acidophilus is sometimes used as an adjunct therapy due to its safety profile and potential, though mild, benefits. In summary, there is some scientific evidence supporting its use, but the quality and consistency of the data are low, resulting in a low overall rating for evidence.
