Evidence supporting the use of: Asam gelugor
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis), also known as "asam keping," has been used traditionally in some Southeast Asian cultures as a remedy for digestive ailments, including constipation in children. The traditional use is based largely on anecdotal evidence and the general belief that the sour fruit stimulates digestion and has mild laxative effects. In folk medicine, slices of the dried fruit are sometimes incorporated into herbal remedies for mild constipation or to promote bowel movement, especially in children who are not severely ill.
However, scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy or safety of Garcinia atroviridis for treating constipation, particularly in children, are lacking. While some phytochemical analyses note that the fruit contains organic acids (such as hydroxycitric acid) and dietary fiber, which could theoretically contribute to digestive health, there are no published clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies supporting its use as a laxative. Thus, its use for childhood constipation is grounded in tradition rather than validated by scientific research. Care should be taken, as the safety profile in children has not been well established.
