Evidence supporting the use of: Atractylone
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Atractylone is a sesquiterpene compound found in Atractylodes species, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The herb Atractylodes macrocephala is a component in various TCM formulas aimed at improving digestive health, including the regulation of bowel movements in children. The use of atractylone or Atractylodes extracts for constipation is primarily based on traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. Classical TCM texts describe Atractylodes as a "spleen-tonifying" herb that helps resolve dampness and supports gastrointestinal function, which, in TCM theory, can help alleviate constipation.
However, there is limited direct scientific evidence investigating atractylone specifically for pediatric constipation. Most available studies focus on the broader effects of Atractylodes extracts, and even those are generally of low quality, animal-based, or anecdotal. No high-quality randomized controlled trials have established the efficacy or safety of atractylone for treating constipation in children. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the supporting evidence is weak, meriting a low rating.
