Bael (Aegle marmelos), also known as Bengal quince, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine (Ayurveda) for treating digestive issues, including constipation, particularly in children. The pulp of the ripe bael fruit is commonly recommended in traditional texts and folk medicine as a gentle, natural laxative. The fruit contains dietary fiber, mucilage, and certain phytochemicals like tannins and coumarins, which are believed to contribute to its effects on the digestive system. Ayurvedic practitioners often prepare bael fruit as a sherbet or pulp mixed with water for children suffering from constipation, claiming that it helps regulate bowel movements without causing irritation or dependency. While there is some limited preclinical and small-scale clinical research investigating the laxative effects of bael, high-quality scientific studies in children are lacking. Most available evidence consists of traditional usage and anecdotal reports.
