Evidence supporting the use of: Bassia scoparia
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bassia scoparia (commonly known as Kochia or broom cypress) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where its seeds, known as "Di Fu Zi," have been utilized primarily for dermatological and urinary indications. Some traditional herbal compendia and ethnobotanical sources suggest that Bassia scoparia may be used as a mild laxative or to "clear heat and dampness," which can be interpreted in some contexts as addressing constipation. However, its use specifically for constipation—especially in children—is not prominent in either classical texts or modern herbal practice. There are limited references in East Asian herbalism to the use of this plant for mild digestive complaints, but these are neither widespread nor well documented. Importantly, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence or modern scientific studies investigating its efficacy or safety for treating constipation in children. Most available information supports its use for skin and urinary conditions, with laxative effects being secondary or anecdotal. Therefore, while there is some traditional precedent, the evidence base is weak and does not meet modern standards for clinical validation, especially in pediatric constipation.
