Historical texts and folk medicine often cite honey’s mild laxative effect and its ability to improve stool consistency, likely due to its osmotic properties and prebiotic oligosaccharides. However, scientific evidence supporting the use of bee products for pediatric constipation is limited. Most available studies focus on honey’s use for cough or wound healing, with only a few small clinical trials or anecdotal reports addressing constipation. Importantly, honey should not be given to infants under 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism. Other bee products, such as propolis or royal jelly, lack any evidence or tradition for treating constipation in children. In summary, while there is a tradition of using honey for childhood constipation, robust clinical evidence is lacking, and safety considerations must be emphasized for young children.
