Bifidobacterium species have been studied for their potential to support or treat constipation in children, with a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting their use. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have evaluated the efficacy of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics in pediatric constipation, particularly functional constipation. For example, a 2017 meta-analysis in the journal Pediatrics found that certain probiotic strains, including Bifidobacterium lactis and Bifidobacterium longum, increased stool frequency in children with constipation, though not all studies showed consistent results for stool consistency or pain.
The proposed mechanisms include modulation of gut microbiota composition, increased production of short-chain fatty acids (which may stimulate colonic motility), and improvement in intestinal barrier function. Although Bifidobacterium species are not a traditional remedy for constipation, their use is grounded in modern clinical research beginning in the early 2000s. The European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) has noted that evidence is promising but not yet strong enough to recommend routine use of probiotics for pediatric constipation, given variability in study outcomes and probiotic strains studied.
