Cinnamon has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Asian cultures, for a variety of digestive complaints. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, cinnamon is sometimes included in herbal remedies intended to "warm" the digestive tract and stimulate gastrointestinal function, which may indirectly help with constipation. However, there are no robust or high-quality clinical studies specifically evaluating cinnamon’s effects on constipation in children. Most of the traditional evidence is anecdotal or based on its general use for improving digestion, rather than for constipation per se. The proposed mechanisms include mild stimulation of digestive enzymes and increased gastrointestinal motility, though these claims have not been substantiated in pediatric populations through controlled trials. In modern herbal practice, cinnamon is more commonly used for its carminative (gas-relieving) and antimicrobial properties, with little emphasis on constipation relief. Therefore, while cinnamon’s use for constipation in children is grounded in traditional practice in some cultures, scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for this purpose is weak. Caution should also be taken regarding dosage and potential for allergic reactions, especially in young children.
