Corn bran is a high-fiber food product derived from the outer layer of corn kernels. Its use in supporting or treating constipation, including in children, is primarily justified by scientific understanding of dietary fiber’s effects on bowel movements. Multiple studies confirm that increased intake of insoluble fiber (such as that found in corn bran) can increase stool bulk and frequency, thereby alleviating constipation. For example, a 1995 randomized controlled trial by Bongers et al. showed that corn bran supplementation increased stool weight and decreased gut transit time in adults. While the majority of intervention studies are in adults, the general mechanism—fiber’s ability to retain water and add bulk to stool—applies to pediatric populations as well.
Clinical guidelines, such as those from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), recommend increased dietary fiber for children with functional constipation, although they do not specifically single out corn bran. Corn bran is one of several fiber sources that can be used to meet these recommendations. However, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically studying corn bran in children are limited, resulting in a moderate evidence rating. Still, its use is consistent with current evidence-based dietary recommendations for managing constipation in children.
