Evidence supporting the use of: Ghee
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ghee, or clarified butter, has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and other Indian systems of medicine to support digestive health and treat constipation, especially in children. According to Ayurvedic texts, ghee is considered a “snehana” (lubricating) substance, which helps to moisten and soften the intestinal tract, thereby facilitating smoother bowel movements. This traditional practice often involves administering small amounts of ghee orally or mixing it with warm milk as a gentle remedy for mild constipation in children.
However, there is a paucity of rigorous scientific research specifically validating ghee’s efficacy for pediatric constipation. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical usage in traditional medicine. A few small studies and reviews on Ayurveda suggest that ghee may have mild laxative properties due to its lubrication of the gut and possible stimulation of bile flow, but these are not robustly designed or focused on children. Modern pediatric guidelines do not endorse ghee as a first-line treatment for constipation.
Overall, the use of ghee for constipation in children is primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific evidence. While it is generally considered safe in small quantities, parents should consult healthcare professionals before using it, especially in children with underlying health conditions or allergies.
