Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium Fructo-Oligosaccharides
For the health condition: Constipation (children)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Magnesium Fructo-Oligosaccharides (Mg-FOS) is a compound that combines magnesium with fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), a type of prebiotic fiber. Both components have been studied individually for their effects on bowel function. Magnesium salts (such as magnesium oxide or citrate) are commonly used osmotic laxatives, attracting water into the intestine and stimulating bowel movements. Fructo-oligosaccharides, as prebiotic fibers, increase stool bulk and water content, and promote beneficial gut microbiota, all of which can aid in relieving constipation. Recent studies, including randomized controlled trials in pediatric populations, have evaluated the combined use of magnesium and FOS for childhood constipation. For example, a 2018 double-blind RCT (Ito et al., Pediatrics International) demonstrated that Mg-FOS improved stool frequency and consistency in constipated children compared to placebo, with a favorable safety profile. The combination is thought to work synergistically: magnesium acts rapidly as an osmotic agent, while FOS contributes to longer-term regulation of bowel function via prebiotic effects. Despite these promising findings, the total body of evidence is moderate, with relatively few large-scale, independent studies. Most available data are from Japanese clinical practice and a handful of published trials. Thus, while scientific evidence supports the use of Magnesium Fructo-Oligosaccharides in treating pediatric constipation, further research is warranted to confirm efficacy and safety across diverse populations.
