Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Oligosaccharides, particularly prebiotic types such as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS), have scientific validation for their use in supporting or treating constipation in children. These non-digestible carbohydrates promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which in turn can improve stool frequency and consistency. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have examined their efficacy. For example, a 2011 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition found that infants receiving formula supplemented with GOS and FOS had softer stools and improved stool frequency compared to those receiving standard formula. A 2017 systematic review in Beneficial Microbes also reported that prebiotic oligosaccharides can alleviate functional constipation in infants and young children, although the magnitude of benefit varies among studies. The overall evidence base is moderate in quality, with some heterogeneity in study results and differences in dosages and specific oligosaccharides used. However, the consensus from current research is that oligosaccharide supplementation is generally safe and can be effective for mild to moderate constipation in children, particularly as part of infant formulas. More robust, large-scale RCTs are needed to further clarify optimal dosing and long-term effects.
