Pear is used to support or treat constipation in children, and its use is supported by scientific evidence. Pears are high in dietary fiber, particularly insoluble fiber, which helps increase stool bulk and promotes regular bowel movements. Pears are also rich in sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol that has an osmotic effect in the gut, drawing water into the colon and softening stools. Several clinical studies and pediatric guidelines recommend high-fiber fruits, such as pears, as a first-line dietary intervention for mild constipation in children. For example, the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) includes pears among the fruits recommended to increase fiber intake for children with constipation. Additionally, research has shown that sorbitol-rich fruits (including pears, apples, and prunes) can help relieve mild constipation due to their laxative properties. Pears are generally well tolerated, making them a preferred natural remedy. More rigorous clinical trials directly assessing pear consumption in children with constipation would strengthen the evidence base.
