Pomegranate (Punica granatum) has been traditionally used in various cultures to support digestive health, including the relief of constipation, particularly in children. The use of pomegranate for constipation is primarily grounded in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, where pomegranate juice, seeds, or peel are sometimes recommended for their mild laxative effects and high fiber content. The fruit is rich in dietary fiber, especially in the edible seeds (arils), which can help increase stool bulk and promote bowel movements. Additionally, pomegranate juice contains small amounts of sorbitol, a sugar alcohol with osmotic laxative properties, which may contribute to its traditional use in alleviating constipation symptoms.

However, scientific validation for the use of pomegranate specifically for constipation in children is limited. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on the general understanding of how dietary fiber aids digestion. Few, if any, clinical studies have directly evaluated pomegranate’s efficacy for this indication in children. The fiber content in pomegranate is moderate compared to other fruits, and while it may contribute to overall digestive health, it is not typically singled out in the scientific literature as a primary remedy for constipation.
