Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. Their use in the management of constipation in children has been the subject of several clinical studies and reviews. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that certain probiotic strains can improve stool frequency and consistency in children with functional constipation. For example, randomized controlled trials with strains like Lactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 have shown modest benefits in increasing the number of stools per week compared to placebo. However, not all studies have found significant effects, and results are inconsistent across different probiotic strains and study designs.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, such as those by the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN), generally conclude that while probiotics appear to be safe in children, the evidence for their efficacy in treating constipation is limited and strain-specific. No single probiotic or combination has yet been universally endorsed for this indication in children. As such, while there is some scientific basis for their use, the overall quality of evidence is low to moderate, and more high-quality, large-scale studies are needed to establish definitive recommendations.
