Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sesame oil has been traditionally used in certain cultures, particularly in Ayurveda and some traditional Chinese medicine practices, as a natural remedy for constipation, including in children. The oil is thought to have lubricating properties that may help soften stool and facilitate bowel movements. Methods of use have included oral administration, massage, or even enemas. However, the scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is minimal. There are only a few small studies and case reports addressing its effectiveness for constipation, and these are generally of low quality or involve adults rather than children. Most modern clinical guidelines for pediatric constipation do not mention sesame oil as a recommended therapy. The majority of evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific evaluation. Therefore, while sesame oil is used for constipation in traditional medicine, its efficacy and safety—especially in children—have not been well established in the scientific literature.
