Sickle Senna (Senna alexandrina, previously Cassia angustifolia or Cassia senna), commonly referred to as senna, is widely used as a stimulant laxative for the treatment of constipation, including in children. Its use is supported by substantial scientific evidence. Senna contains compounds called sennosides, which are metabolized by colonic bacteria into active metabolites that stimulate peristalsis and alter fluid secretion, resulting in bowel movements.

Multiple clinical studies and systematic reviews have demonstrated the efficacy of senna in treating constipation in both adults and children. For pediatric use, guidelines such as those from the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) include senna among recommended pharmacologic agents for treating pediatric constipation, particularly where other interventions have failed. However, dosing must be carefully managed to avoid adverse effects such as abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health authorities recognize the use of senna for short-term relief of occasional constipation. Long-term use is not recommended, especially in children, due to potential for dependence or electrolyte disturbances. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting senna’s use in pediatric constipation is robust, though it is typically reserved for cases where lifestyle and dietary modifications have proven insufficient.
