Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic herbal formulation composed of three fruits—Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)—has been used in India for centuries to support digestive health, including the management of constipation. Its use for constipation is primarily justified by historical and traditional Ayurvedic texts, which describe triphala as a mild laxative, suitable for long-term use and gentle enough for children in appropriate dosages.
Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners recommend triphala for regulating bowel movements and improving gastrointestinal function. The individual fruits in triphala are believed to possess mild laxative and digestive properties; for example, haritaki is especially noted for its efficacy in alleviating constipation. Although most of the scientific studies on triphala have been conducted in adults, some small-scale studies and case reports suggest that it may have laxative effects. However, high-quality randomized controlled trials in children are lacking.
