Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Myoviridae is a family of bacteriophages—viruses that infect and kill bacteria. Their use to support or treat contagious diseases is grounded in scientific evidence, particularly within the field of phage therapy. Phage therapy involves the application of bacteriophages to target and destroy pathogenic bacteria, especially those causing infectious (contagious) diseases. This approach has been explored as an alternative or supplement to antibiotics, especially in the context of rising antibiotic resistance.

There are documented clinical and preclinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of Myoviridae phages against a variety of bacterial pathogens, including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Escherichia coli. Notably, some Myoviridae phages have broad host ranges and strong bactericidal activity, making them valuable agents in combating bacterial infections. Several case reports and small clinical trials, especially from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, have shown successful treatment of bacterial infections using phage preparations containing Myoviridae members.

However, while scientific validation exists, large-scale, rigorous randomized clinical trials are still limited, and regulatory approval varies by country. The evidence base is growing, and in some cases, compassionate use of phage therapy—including Myoviridae—is permitted for otherwise untreatable infections. Thus, the use of Myoviridae to support or treat bacterial contagious diseases is scientifically justified, with a moderate to high level of supporting evidence.
