Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fatty acid or fat/oil supplements are used in the context of convalescence—recovery from illness, surgery, or trauma—primarily due to their roles in providing energy, supporting cell membrane integrity, and modulating inflammation. Scientific evidence indicates that essential fatty acids (such as omega-3 and omega-6) are crucial for numerous physiological processes including immune function and tissue repair. Several studies have demonstrated that supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., from fish oil) can help reduce inflammation and may support recovery in hospitalized or critically ill patients, potentially improving outcomes such as wound healing and decreasing complications. Additionally, in patients with malnutrition or those unable to meet caloric requirements orally, fat-based enteral or parenteral nutrition is routinely used to supply concentrated energy and essential nutrients.

However, while the rationale for using fat/oil supplements in convalescence is well-supported in clinical nutrition and critical care, the evidence base for their benefit in otherwise healthy individuals recovering from minor illnesses is less robust. Much of the strong evidence comes from studies in the context of severe illness, surgical recovery, or malnutrition, and not all fat blends or formulations have been equally studied. Therefore, the use is justified scientifically, with a moderate level of evidence (rating: 3/5), especially in clinical populations where enhanced nutritional support is warranted.
