Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Fungi, including various medicinal mushrooms such as Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis), have a long history of traditional use in supporting convalescence—recovery from illness or weakness—especially in East Asian medical systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these and other fungi are considered to tonify Qi (vital energy), enhance immune function, and promote general recovery after sickness, surgery, or periods of fatigue. Historical materia medica texts often recommend mushroom extracts or decoctions for patients regaining strength, citing their nourishing and restorative properties.

Modern scientific studies do provide some evidence for immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects of certain medicinal mushrooms, but direct clinical trials specifically evaluating their efficacy in accelerating convalescence in humans are limited and generally of low methodological quality. Most research focuses on isolated bioactive compounds, such as beta-glucans, that may enhance immune response. However, definitive, large-scale clinical evidence for their use in convalescence remains lacking. Therefore, the use of unspecified fungus for supporting convalescence is justified primarily by traditional sources, with only modest preliminary scientific support.
