Ligandrol (LGD-4033) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has been investigated for its potential to increase muscle mass and strength, which are often compromised during periods of convalescence (recovery from illness or surgery). Several early-phase clinical trials have reported that Ligandrol can significantly increase lean body mass in healthy volunteers over several weeks without the androgenic side effects typical of anabolic steroids. For example, a 2013 phase I study published in "The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism" found that LGD-4033 increased lean body mass in healthy men, with a favorable safety profile over a 21-day period. The rationale for its use during convalescence is based on its ability to counteract muscle wasting (sarcopenia) and improve physical function, which are critical for recovery in patients with chronic illness, injury, or post-surgical states.

However, while preliminary results are promising and provide scientific validation for its anabolic effects, Ligandrol is not approved by regulatory authorities for medical use in convalescence or any other indication. Long-term safety and efficacy data are lacking, and concerns remain regarding potential side effects and misuse. Therefore, while there is scientific support for its potential utility in supporting recovery by mitigating muscle loss, the current level of evidence is moderate (rated 3), pending larger, long-term clinical trials to confirm its benefits and safety in convalescent populations.
