Ostarine (also known as MK-2866 or Enobosarm) is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) that has garnered interest for its potential to support muscle maintenance and growth during periods of convalescence—such as after illness, surgery, or injury—when patients are at risk of muscle wasting (sarcopenia). The scientific rationale behind its use is based on Ostarine’s ability to selectively bind to androgen receptors in muscle and bone tissue, promoting anabolic activity without many of the side effects associated with traditional anabolic steroids.

Several clinical trials have investigated Ostarine’s effects in populations at risk of muscle wasting. For example, a phase II clinical trial published in the journal The Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (2011) found that elderly men and postmenopausal women treated with Ostarine had significant increases in lean body mass and improvements in physical function compared to placebo. Other studies have examined its use in cancer cachexia and chronic illness, with some demonstrating modest benefits in muscle mass retention or gain.

However, while these results are promising, Ostarine is not currently approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA for the treatment of muscle wasting or for use in convalescence. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to fully establish its safety and efficacy profile. In summary, Ostarine’s use in convalescence is justified by preliminary scientific evidence, but it remains investigational and is not a standard or approved therapy for this condition.
