Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polysaccharides have been traditionally used in various cultures to support recovery during convalescence, particularly through the consumption of medicinal mushrooms (such as reishi, shiitake, and maitake) and certain herbal remedies (like Astragalus and Panax ginseng). These traditions are especially prominent in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems, where polysaccharide-rich foods and extracts are believed to “restore qi,” “strengthen the body,” and enhance immune function during recovery from illness or surgery. The rationale is based on centuries of anecdotal use rather than robust clinical trials.

Scientific studies have identified that some polysaccharides, particularly beta-glucans from mushrooms and plants, can modulate immune function in vitro and in animal models. However, clinical evidence directly supporting the use of polysaccharides for convalescence in humans remains limited and mostly preliminary. Most available human trials focus on immune markers or general wellness rather than well-defined convalescence outcomes. Therefore, while traditional use is widespread and there is some scientific plausibility, the evidence base is not strong, and the use is primarily supported by tradition.
