Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as a tonic for improving vitality, promoting longevity, and supporting recovery from illness — a period known as convalescence. In TCM, reishi is called "Lingzhi" and is often classified as a "superior herb," believed to restore balance and enhance the body's resistance to stress and disease. Historical texts and traditional practitioners have recommended reishi for individuals recovering from various illnesses, citing its purported ability to strengthen "qi" (vital energy), nourish the heart, and calm the mind, all regarded as important for proper convalescence.

Scientific research into reishi's effects during convalescence is limited, and most studies focus on its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that compounds in reishi mushrooms, such as polysaccharides and triterpenoids, may enhance immune function and reduce oxidative stress, which theoretically could assist recovery. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically investigating reishi for convalescence are lacking. The evidence supporting its use for this purpose thus remains largely traditional, with only indirect scientific support. Overall, while reishi may offer benefits relevant to recovery based on traditional use and some preclinical data, high-quality clinical evidence is insufficient, resulting in a moderate-low (2/5) evidence rating.
