Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Siler (commonly known as Fang Feng, derived from the roots of Saposhnikovia divaricata) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for supporting individuals during convalescence—the recovery period following illness. In TCM, Siler is considered to have properties that "expel wind," relieve pain, and support the body's defenses against lingering external pathogens. Classic texts such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and the Compendium of Materia Medica describe its use to help restore vitality and strength after episodes of fever, colds, and other illnesses, especially when weakness and fatigue persist.

However, there is limited scientific research directly validating Siler’s efficacy specifically for convalescence. Most modern research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and immunomodulatory properties, but these studies do not directly address recovery after illness, and human clinical trials are sparse. Thus, while Siler’s use in convalescence is well-rooted in traditional practice, it lacks robust scientific evidence for this indication. The traditional rating reflects the long-standing historical context and continued use in TCM formulas aimed at supporting recovery, rather than direct clinical proof.
