Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Turkey has traditionally been recommended as a food to support convalescence, primarily due to its mild flavor, digestibility, and high protein content. Historically, easily digestible, protein-rich foods such as poultry meats have been included in the diets of recovering patients in many cultures. Turkey provides essential amino acids for tissue repair, as well as micronutrients like B vitamins (notably niacin and B6), zinc, and selenium, which are important in supporting immune function and general recovery. However, this recommendation is rooted more in general dietary principles for recovery rather than specific scientific studies demonstrating unique convalescent benefits of turkey meat itself.

There is minimal direct scientific research evaluating turkey’s effectiveness in supporting convalescence compared to other protein sources. Modern nutritional guidelines for recovery from illness do emphasize adequate protein and micronutrient intake, and turkey can fulfill these requirements. However, scientific validation of turkey as uniquely beneficial for convalescence, beyond its general nutritional properties, is lacking. Thus, while the use is justified by tradition and general nutritional rationale, the strength of direct evidence is modest.
