Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) has traditionally been included in multivitamin and tonic formulations intended for convalescence, based on its role as an essential nutrient in energy metabolism and the synthesis of coenzyme A. Historically, B vitamins as a group have been recommended during recovery from illness or surgery, under the rationale that they may help restore nutritional status and energy levels after physical stress or depletion. However, specific scientific validation for supplemental vitamin B5 in convalescence is minimal. Most evidence supporting its use in this context is derived from its established necessity for basic physiological functions and from animal studies showing deficiency can impair recovery and wound healing. There are very few, if any, high-quality clinical trials directly assessing the benefits of vitamin B5 supplementation in convalescent patients who are not otherwise deficient. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and a theoretical basis, robust scientific proof for its specific efficacy in convalescence remains lacking.
