Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Adrenal extracts have a long history of traditional use, particularly in naturopathic and alternative medicine, where they are believed to support the body's stress response and "adrenal fatigue" by aiding the cortisol system. Historically, adrenal glandular supplements were derived from animal (usually bovine or porcine) adrenal glands and were thought to provide nutrients and compounds that might support adrenal health and hormone production. However, the concept of "adrenal fatigue" itself is not widely recognized in mainstream medicine, and its existence is debated among medical professionals. Scientific validation for adrenal extracts directly supporting the cortisol system in humans is lacking. Most clinical studies have either not been conducted or have failed to provide robust evidence for efficacy. Some animal research suggests adrenal gland extracts contain small amounts of adrenal hormones, but these do not have a proven therapeutic impact in humans when taken orally. Regulatory agencies in several countries have also raised concerns about the safety and variability of these products. While some individuals report subjective improvements, these reports are anecdotal, and there is insufficient clinical evidence to support the use of adrenal extracts for supporting cortisol or adrenal function. Thus, the use of adrenal extracts for this purpose remains primarily traditional rather than evidence-based.
