Evidence supporting the use of: Adrenals
For the body system: Cortisol
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Adrenal glandular supplements (often referred to as "Adrenals") have a long history of use in traditional and alternative medicine, particularly within naturopathic and holistic health circles. The rationale for their use stems from the belief that consuming extracts of animal adrenal glands may support the function of the human adrenal glands, which are responsible for producing cortisol and other stress-related hormones. Historically, these supplements have been promoted for conditions described as "adrenal fatigue" or general stress, aiming to improve energy, stress response, and well-being.
However, there is limited scientific research directly validating the effectiveness of adrenal glandular supplements in supporting cortisol production or adrenal function in humans. Most claims are based on traditional practices and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials. The mainstream medical community does not recognize "adrenal fatigue" as a diagnosable condition, and there is concern about the safety and efficacy of consuming animal glandular extracts.
While a few small studies and case reports have explored the use of glandular therapies, these are not sufficient to support widespread scientific endorsement. Therefore, while the traditional use is well documented, scientific validation is minimal, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
