Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eurycoma longifolia (commonly known as Tongkat Ali) is traditionally used as an adaptogen and for male reproductive health. In recent years, several scientific studies have investigated its potential impact on the cortisol system—a key hormonal regulator of the body’s stress response. Preclinical studies and some small human trials suggest that Eurycoma longifolia supplementation may help modulate cortisol levels, particularly in the context of stress. For instance, a randomized, placebo-controlled study (J Int Soc Sports Nutr, 2013) found that individuals taking Eurycoma longifolia extract for four weeks showed a significant reduction in salivary cortisol levels compared to placebo. This suggests a possible role in supporting the body’s stress adaptation mechanisms.

The proposed mechanism involves the herb’s influence on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, possibly reducing the synthesis or release of cortisol during periods of psychological or physical stress. However, while these findings are promising, the body of evidence remains limited by small sample sizes and short study durations. Additional larger, well-controlled human studies are needed to conclusively establish efficacy and safety.

In summary, scientific evidence—though still emerging and somewhat preliminary—does support the use of Eurycoma longifolia to help regulate cortisol and support the body’s stress response, justifying its inclusion in formulations targeting the cortisol system.
