Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactium is a patented bioactive decapeptide derived from casein, known scientifically as alpha-casozepine. It is promoted for its potential to support stress management and modulate the body's response to stressors, which often involves cortisol, the primary stress hormone. Several small randomized controlled trials and preclinical studies suggest that Lactium may have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects and can help reduce stress-related symptoms. For example, some studies have reported reductions in perceived stress and improvements in sleep quality in adults and children who consumed Lactium. In these studies, secondary endpoints sometimes included measurements of salivary or plasma cortisol, with some findings indicating modest decreases in cortisol levels compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism is that alpha-casozepine binds to GABA-A receptors in the brain, similar to the action of benzodiazepines, resulting in a calming effect on the central nervous system. However, the clinical evidence is still limited. Most studies are industry-sponsored, involve small sample sizes, and often show only modest effects. There is currently insufficient high-quality, large-scale evidence to firmly establish Lactium as an effective supplement for regulating cortisol or supporting the "Cortisol body system." While initial findings are promising and there is a plausible mechanism of action, more independent and robust research is required before definitive claims can be made. Therefore, the current evidence supports a moderate but not strong scientific rationale for its use in this context.
