Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Oriental Ginseng (Panax ginseng), also known as Asian or Korean ginseng, has a long tradition in herbal medicine for promoting vitality and resilience to stress. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to explore its effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and cortisol regulation. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that ginsenosides, the active compounds in Panax ginseng, may modulate the body's stress response by influencing the secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol levels. Some human clinical trials indicate that supplementation with Panax ginseng can reduce perceived stress and fatigue, and may blunt elevations in cortisol associated with acute stress. However, results are variable and often limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and inconsistent dosing regimens. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews note potential adaptogenic effects, but conclude that more robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to firmly establish efficacy. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for the use of Oriental Ginseng in supporting healthy cortisol regulation and stress adaptation, the quality and quantity of human data currently warrant a moderate evidence rating.
