Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Rhodiola crenulata is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Tibetan and Chinese medicine to enhance resilience against stress and fatigue. Modern scientific interest has focused on its potential to modulate the body’s stress response, particularly regarding the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and cortisol regulation. Several studies on Rhodiola species, especially Rhodiola rosea (a related species), have demonstrated the potential to reduce perceived stress, improve mental performance, and attenuate fatigue—effects associated with a more balanced cortisol response. While direct clinical studies on Rhodiola crenulata are fewer than for R. rosea, preclinical research and limited human trials suggest that extracts of R. crenulata can influence the secretion of stress hormones, including cortisol, and help maintain homeostasis during episodes of physical and psychological stress.

The active compounds, such as salidroside and rosavin, are thought to underlie these adaptogenic effects by modulating neurotransmitter levels and reducing stress-induced damage. Systematic reviews and some randomized controlled trials (mainly with R. rosea) support modest benefits for stress adaptation and cortisol moderation, but more direct, high-quality studies with R. crenulata are needed for definitive conclusions. Therefore, the use of Rhodiola crenulata to support the cortisol body system is reasonably supported by preliminary scientific evidence, but it is not as well established as its traditional use or as well studied as R. rosea.
