Evidence supporting the use of: Rhodola crenulata
For the body system: Cortisol
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Rhodiola crenulata (often grouped with Rhodiola rosea in studies) is an adaptogenic herb traditionally used in Tibetan and Chinese medicine to combat fatigue and enhance resilience to stress. The rationale for its use in supporting the "Cortisol body system" stems from its purported ability to modulate the body's stress response. Scientific studies, though limited, suggest that Rhodiola may have a normalizing effect on cortisol levels. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have shown that Rhodiola extracts can reduce subjective feelings of stress and fatigue, and may blunt elevations in cortisol following stress exposure. The active compounds, such as salidroside and rosavin, are believed to influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which regulates cortisol production. However, much of the research has been conducted on Rhodiola rosea rather than R. crenulata specifically, and sample sizes are often small. While evidence is promising and supports traditional use, direct high-quality clinical trials on R. crenulata and its effects on cortisol in humans remain limited. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for using Rhodiola species to support healthy cortisol balance, the strength of evidence for R. crenulata specifically is moderate.
