Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Allium tuberosum (commonly known as Chinese chive or garlic chive) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, it is considered warm and pungent, and is sometimes used to treat conditions associated with 'dampness,' such as coughs with phlegm (often described as 'damp cough'). The seeds and leaves are sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at supporting lung function and resolving phlegm, with the belief that their warming and dispersing properties help 'transform phlegm' and stop cough.

However, the support for this use is primarily from TCM texts and materia medica, rather than modern scientific research. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials or laboratory studies that specifically investigate Allium tuberosum for cough (damp or otherwise). Some phytochemical studies have identified compounds in the plant with mild antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activities, but these have not been directly linked to antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects in humans. Therefore, while its use for damp cough is justified by tradition, the evidence is largely anecdotal and historical, not scientific.
