Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema (often referring to Arisaema erubescens or Arisaema consanguineum, known as "Tian Nan Xing" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) is traditionally used to treat coughs associated with "dampness" and phlegm accumulation. In the framework of TCM, "damp" cough refers to symptoms characterized by a productive cough with thick sputum, chest congestion, and a sensation of heaviness. Arisaema is classified as an herb that "dries dampness and transforms phlegm." It is commonly included in classical formulas for resolving phlegm and alleviating cough, such as Er Chen Tang and Wen Dan Tang (when appropriately processed, as raw Arisaema is toxic). Historical texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later materia medica, document its use specifically for phlegm-related respiratory issues. However, there is limited modern scientific research or clinical trials validating its efficacy for cough, especially in the context of Western medical definitions. Some pharmacological studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antitussive properties in processed forms, but data are sparse and primarily preclinical. Thus, its use for "damp" cough is supported by longstanding traditional practice rather than robust modern scientific evidence.
