Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Botanical blends have been traditionally used in many systems of herbal medicine, especially in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, to address coughs associated with "dampness." In TCM, a "damp cough" typically refers to coughs that are productive, with symptoms such as phlegm, chest congestion, and a feeling of heaviness. Botanical blends for such conditions often include herbs like Pinellia ternata, Poria cocos, Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice), and Platycodon grandiflorum. These ingredients are believed to help transform phlegm, dry dampness, and soothe the respiratory tract according to traditional theory. The use of such botanical combinations is well-documented in classical texts and remains common in modern herbal practice in Asia. However, while these blends have a long history of use, high-quality scientific evidence supporting their efficacy for "damp" cough is limited. Some preclinical and small clinical studies have suggested that individual herbs may have expectorant, anti-inflammatory, or antitussive properties, but large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking. Thus, while tradition strongly supports their use, scientific validation remains modest at best, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
