Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Pinellia ternata (Ban Xia) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for the treatment of coughs associated with "dampness." In TCM theory, "damp" coughs are characterized by symptoms such as copious sputum, a feeling of chest congestion, and a thick, greasy tongue coating. Pinellia ternata is classified as an herb that transforms phlegm and dries dampness, and is a key ingredient in classic formulas such as Er Chen Tang, which targets phlegm-damp coughs and respiratory congestion. Historical materia medica texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and later TCM literature, consistently reference the use of Pinellia ternata for these indications. While there is some modern pharmacological research indicating that extracts of Pinellia ternata may have anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, the bulk of clinical use and justification for treating "damp" cough originates from traditional sources rather than rigorous clinical trials. To date, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence from human studies specifically validating the efficacy of Pinellia ternata for coughs with dampness, but its use is well-established in traditional herbal practice.
